The 4MATIC system incorporates a central differential in planetary configuration. A key characteristic of 4MATIC is the absence of conventional differential locks.


Instead, the wheels with inadequate road grip undergo specific braking while the drive torque on the wheels with good traction is increased. With these fast, automatic braking impulses it is possible to attain the effect of three differential locks. The automatic braking impulses which improve traction when starting off on slippery surfaces and increase stability in critical driving manoeuvres are applied by the system according to sensor data on the wheel speeds, the steering wheel angle, yawing and lateral acceleration of the vehicle. At the core of the 4MATIC system is a single-speed transfer case (GL-Class: dual-speed) with open central differential which is responsible for rotational speed compensation between the axles. It is connected directly to the automatic transmission and forms a complete drive unit together with the engine, torque converter and front-axle gear. All-wheel-drive systems are commonly associated with mountainous terrain and heavy SUVs. All-wheel drive also ensures more dynamic, comfortable and safer motoring for passenger cars on normal roads, however. 4MATIC, the permanent all-wheel drive from Mercedes-Benz, is a case in point. It guarantees optimum traction at all times - thanks to perfect coordination of the individual wheels.
