Changes may have been made since these images and films were produced.

With over 100 test vehicles which have covered more than 4.5 million kilometres, Mercedes-Benz possesses the most extensive experience with fuel cell vehicles worldwide.

The B-Class F-CELL plays a pioneering role here as the first fuel cell vehicle to be manufactured under series production conditions. The onus is on 100 percent driving pleasure / zero emissions, according to the motto "H2O instead of CO2".

The technological core of the B-Class F-CELL is the new generation of the compact, high-performance fuel cell system, in which the hydrogen gas which is stored on board at 700 bar reacts with oxygen from the air. This reaction produces the electricity for the electric motor and pure water vapour, which exits the vehicle free of emissions via the exhaust system.

A lithium-ion battery with an output of 35 kW and a capacity of 1.4 kWh is employed for boosting and for the recuperation of braking energy. Advantages of lithium-ion batteries over conventional batteries are their compact dimensions, high performance and crash safety, high recharge efficiency, long service life and outstanding cold-start ability even at temperatures as low as minus 25 degrees Celsius.

The electric motor has a power output of 100 kW/136 hp. Its max. torque of 290 Newton metres is available right from the very first turn of the motor. This provides the B-Class F-CELL with impressive dynamic performance which outstrips two-litre petrol-engine vehicles in some areas. At the same time, the emission-free fuel cell drive gets by on the equivalent of only 3.3 litres of fuel (diesel equivalent) per 100 kilometres in the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC). The B-Class F-CELL also makes local emission-free mobility possible on longer journeys, with its range of around 400 kilometres and a short refuelling time of around three minutes.

The B-Class F-CELL offers everything one expects of a Mercedes-Benz: plenty of comfort, comprehensive safety and a spacious interior and luggage compartment, thanks to its unique sandwich floor architecture. The advantage of this design is that the drive components are accommodated in the sandwich floor, which saves space while also affording protection. This avoids any restrictions on space inside the vehicle and provides for a luggage compartment capacity of 416 litres.

The B-Class F-CELL demonstrates in impressive manner the advanced stage of maturity which has already been attained with fuel cell technology in cars. In order to turn local emission-free driving into reality on a large scale, an extensive network of hydrogen refuelling stations now needs to be established. Mercedes-Benz is working towards this end in joint projects with the public sector, power producers and mineral oil groups, e.g. in Hamburg, Stuttgart and California.
