With Active Parking Assist from Mercedes-Benz the vehicle seeks an appropriate parking space on its own initiative and manoeuvres into the space automatically at the push of a button, with the driver required only to operate the accelerator and brake.

Parking Assist begins looking for parking spaces automatically at speeds of under 36 km/h. When the vehicle is travelling at under 30 km/h, Parking Assist signals that it has found an appropriate space by means of a "P" and a direction arrow on the instrument cluster display. The driver is merely required to engage reverse gear, confirm the parking prompt and ensure that the vehicle is not travelling in excess of 10 km/h. Active Parking Assist then attends to manoeuvring into the space on its own.

For the purposes of automatic parking, the ultrasonic sensors of the PARKTRONIC system measure the distance to the vehicle in front and behind. The driver retains control of the vehicle throughout the parking process and is required only to regulate the speed with the accelerator or brake pedal. After a few brief manoeuvres, the vehicle is duly parked facing in the driving direction.

Active Parking Assist incorporates a total of ten ultrasonic sensors – six in the front bumper and four in the rear bumper – together with an electronic control unit which processes the sensor signals and calculates the ideal path into the parking space. This information is relayed to the electro-mechanical power steering system, whose electric motor performs the necessary steering movements automatically. The system operates with extreme precision: a parking space just 1.2 metres longer than the vehicle is sufficient for the automatic parking process.
