The S 400 HYBRID from Mercedes-Benz is the first series-production hybrid vehicle worldwide featuring the innovative lithium-ion high-voltage battery and is the declared CO2 champion of the luxury class.
In comparison to conventional nickel-metal hydride batteries, the new battery offers a higher energy density, greater electrical efficiency, more compact dimensions and a lower weight. This enables the S 400 HYBRID to retain the generous interior dimensions and luggage compartment volume of its conventionally powered counterpart.
The 3.5-litre V6 petrol engine with adaptive valve control has been thoroughly revamped and optimised. The engine's thermal efficiency has been increased while lowering its specific fuel consumption and untreated emissions. At the same time, the power output has been increased by 5 kW (7 hp) to 205 kW (279 hp).
The hybrid module, a disc-type electric motor, also serves as the starter and generator. The compact unit additionally provides an effective means of damping torsional vibration in the drivetrain. The resultant reduction in noise and vibrations means further enhanced ride comfort.
The modified high-performance engine control unit adapts the drive system perfectly to the given driving mode – urban driving, long-distance trips, motorway driving or manoeuvring – so as to keep fuel consumption and emissions at the lowest possible levels.
A separate display function in the instrument cluster provides the driver with up-to-date information on the prevailing energy flow during boosting and recuperation and on the charge status of the battery. The entire system weighs only 75 kilograms. The hybrid technology of the S 400 HYBRID is protected by a total of seven fuses.
How the drive of the S 400 HYBRID works in daily use:
STOPPING AT TRAFFIC LIGHTS: The start/stop function switches off the engine when the car is stationary. When the vehicle moves off again, the electric motor starts the main engine virtually without the driver noticing. This reduces fuel consumption and emissions.
MOVING OFF and ACCELERATING: The so-called boost effect ensures superior power delivery here, as the compact electric motor (starter/alternator) supports the combustion engine in the fuel-intensive acceleration phase. At an operating voltage of 120 V the motor generates a maximum output of 15 kW (20 hp) and starting torque of 160 Nm.
RECUPERATION: During deceleration of the vehicle the electric motor acts as a generator and is able to recover braking energy – this is known as recuperation. The electric motor boosts the engine brake in the process.
LONG-DISTANCE TRIPS and MOTORWAY DRIVING: Shifting the so-called operating point of the combustion engine in the direction of reduced specific consumption provides for improved efficiency in particular on long-distance trips or in motorway driving. In addition, boost, cruising and recuperation phases occur in alternation on long-distance trips. Depending on the route profile, this means that substantial quantities of recuperation energy are available to further reduce fuel consumption and emissions.
COASTING DOWN/DOWNHILL TRAVEL: Recuperation is also activated here every time the vehicle decelerates when you take your foot off the accelerator and the engine brake takes effect.
IN A NUTSHELL: The HYBRID from Mercedes-Benz offers superior performance and exemplary fuel economy. The S 400 HYBRID puts in an impressive showing in its vehicle category and engine-power class, with CO2 emissions of only 186-191 g/km. Fuel consumption stands at just 7.9-8.2 l/100 km (values for combined mode in each case)*.
