Hill Start Assist forms part of the ESP® package and prevents the vehicle from rolling backwards when moving off on an uphill slope by maintaining the brake pressure while the driver shifts from the brake to the accelerator pedal.

The engineers at Mercedes have added another standard-fit feature to the Electronic Stability Program (ESP®): the automatic Hill Start Assist function. Hill Start Assist prevents the vehicle from rolling backwards when the driver's foot moves from the brake to the accelerator pedal while moving off on an uphill slope. In such situations, ESP® maintains the brake pressure briefly to allow the car to move off smoothly.
