Blind Spot Assist
Blind Spot Assist monitors the area that the driver cannot see in the mirrors. It displays vehicles present there in the exterior mirrors and emits an audible warning if the turn indicator is set.
Dangerous situations occur again and again due to drivers reacting too late to other road-users in the vehicle's blind spot, or not reacting at all.
The blind spot is the area around the vehicle that the driver cannot see when using the rear-view mirror and exterior mirrors. It is the task of Blind Spot Assist to monitor this very source of danger. It uses short-range radar sensors to identify vehicles in this poorly visible area in good time. If the systems detects the presence of another vehicle it alerts the driver to it by displaying a red warning triangle in the relevant exterior mirror. If the turn indicator is already set, or if the driver activates it anyway, the warning light will start to flash and an audible alarm is emitted in the form of a double warning tone.
Blind Spot Assist is functional at speeds between 30 km/h and 250 km/h. At speeds under 30 km/h a yellow triangle is displayed to show that the system is not active. The sensors cover an area extending approximately 3.5 m from both sides of the vehicle and 3 m to the rear. If they recognise a vehicle that is overtaking it is displayed immediately on entering the monitored zone, as long as the relative difference in the speeds of the vehicles is not more than 16 km/h. On the other hand, vehicles which have just been overtaken are displayed with a 1.5-second delay after entering the monitored area. This prevents the occurrence of annoying unnecessary warnings.
Blind Spot Assist can be switched on or off via the Assistance Systems menu in the instrument cluster. If a trailer is connected, the system is deactivated, as long as the connection involves a Mercedes-Benz trailer coupling / Mercedes-Benz electrical kit.
Blind Spot Assist is not a substitute for anticipatory driving, but it can help compensate for errors made by the driver.
